By the time you read this I will have gotten back from the theater where I went to see Aida, a production I've never seen. We trot out every few months to a local theater that specializes in mostly musicals. And it's always a gamble since you don't get to see trailers with a theatrical production. But I like the adventure and surprise of that.
The last play we saw was Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, which I was rather surprised the theater had chosen. It's been around a long time and I was afraid it would be rather dated. I also was of the opinion that the storyline was a bit sexist (there was kidnapping involved if you haven't seen it). But after expressing this opinion to some Facebook friends, they convinced me that I might be looking at things the wrong way and that the kidnapping had been set up in such a way that there was nothing malicious about it.
I'm not sure if any of you have ever seen it, but here's the trailer from the 1954 movie:
Have you seen it? If so, what did you think? And if you haven't seen it, what's either your favorite play or your favorite musical (movies count). Or...do you not like musicals at all?
I'll check back in later to see what everyone had to say.
Best Wishes!

I have not seen this movie for many years. I always loved the barn raising scenes. I love a GREAT musical.

I have always loved movie musicals, and musical theater is very exciting! Howard Keel is one of my all-time favorite performers. He stars in "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers". He and Kathryn Grayson star together in "Show Boat" (1951), which is my all-time favorite movie!
My grandmother, mother, and I used to watch the Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald musicals, and I love them to this day! I have them all on tape, and I cry every time because Gran and Mom are no longer with me! Bittersweet : )
Mary and Virginia, didn't Howard Keel have a great voice? Oh, and I'd almost forgotten Kathryn Grayson. Beautiful and she could sing, too. I miss movie musicals, but I suppose they wouldn't do well at the box office these days.
One of the plays we saw (about a year ago) was Ragtime. They did a wonderful job. It almost reminded me of some of these old favorite movies.
It has been awhile since I watched Seven Brides for Seven Brothers... my sister loves old movies and gets me to watch them with her...
As for plays or musicals, the only one ever saw in person was Les Miserables and that was memorable! Loved it so much I had to get the soundtrack on tape and then later on CD!
Colleen, I haven't seen Les Miserables, but I really (really) want to. I love the song One Day More!
