It does sound a bit like Patrick Stewart, but yes, it's Cumberbatch (love that name). He (Benedict Cumberbatch) has certainly been busy lately. Besides playing the villain here, he's also playing a villain, the dragon Smaugh, in The Hobbit, although...I've heard that we won't really get to see him until the second movie (might be wrong about that).
The fact that both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were filming and promoting The Hobbit and working on other movies is why Sherlock's season 3 is being delayed a bit isn't it? Here in the states we won't see Season 3 until late 2013 or early 2014.
