Fabric as Art
I'm a total sucker for anything colorful. Paint samples, store displays, yarn, fabric, beads...I love all the possible color combinations. So today, I'm just looking at fabric, either as art or simply as raw fabric. Either way, it's fun for me.

At work we drape fabric around the room - down the walls, across the ceiling and hanging down. You soon learn what colours work together. We change it each term. We know we've hit the right note when parents walk in & go WOW!! The drapes divide up the room without obscuring our vision. We also drape over tables to display or highlight an activity for the children. I work in Early Childhood.
My daughter is an Early Childhood Educator who teaches at a local daycare. (What a coincidence, Mary!) They go in every month or two to "switch up" the rooms and make them "new" again, so she is always experimenting with colour.
Me? I do not buy things for the sake of having something new (like different coloured cushions every season); if something breaks, THEN we decide if it can be fixed or not, and THEN we might buy something new to replace it IF we must. I'm a firm believer in, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Why? We're selective about how we spend our money. We would rather have trips to visit family than anything else. As a result, we have 30-year-old wall-to-wall carpeting in our house that should have been replaced over 10 years ago. Every time it makes it to the top of our list, something more important comes along. Last year it was shingling for the house, carport, and garage. Two years ago it was re-siding the garage and back of house. Before that it was one niece's wedding 2,000 miles away on Thanksgiving weekend and her sister's wedding a few years later (as you can't attend one and not the other!). Yup. There's always something....
Mary, that sounds wonderful! When I was teaching, I used to use fabric as backings for bulletin boards, but nothing of the magnitude you're talking about. I'd love to see that.
Elaine, we tend to wait to fix things up, too. It's fun, though, to try to be innovative with the old stuff (repurposing old things to make them seem new).
