Here's a video of the sculptors at work. I believe they begin on Wednesday (once the snow blocks are formed), then work through Saturday morning at around 10 AM when judging takes place. Grand Geneva Resort, which has snow making equipment, provides the snow blocks.
I'm so glad that the weather was cooperative this year. In recent years the weather has been warm (once it even rained), and the sculptures were melting even as they were being created. This led to the sculptors having to quickly make adjustments and eliminate some of the detail work. Plus, the sculptures remain there until nature destroys them, so the continuing cold weather will help them remain for awhile this year (although with snow on the way this week, they may be covered in a topping of snow, and their features may soon be blurred). Great fun! If you ever get to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, during the first weekend in February, stop by and see the show!

I'm always amazed to see the commitment of these snow sculptors. No matter what the conditions are, they stay out there creating their art. And it's all for pride of accomplishment, because despite the fact that this is the national championship, there isn't any prize. The sculptors themselves vote for the winner. So, it's inspiring. Sadly, their art is quickly erased by the elements. Once the sun comes out and the weather warms a bit, the sculptures quickly melt and disappear.
