But I recently found another interesting trio of books that can't quite be categorized as a series and yet had a continuing setting and references to characters in prior books.
I suppose that recently isn't exactly the right turn. I had read Pamela Morsi's Marrying Stone and Simple Jess years ago and have reread both of them at least once. They're historical romances and I've always enjoyed Pamela Morsi's historicals. But a couple of weeks ago I decided to finally try one of her contemporary novels and settled on The Lovesick Cure, primarily because it takes place in the town of Marrying Stone and the heroine is a descendant of the hero and heroine in Simple Jess. I have to say that it was quite interesting reading the combination of historicals and contemporary. I'm not sure that would work every time, but in this case it did.
So, are you a series reader or a single book reader? Historical or contemporary or both?

I enjoy series, connected books & stand alone. I do prefer to have an entire series in hand if it is ongoing. (Not a fan of cliffhangers.) My preference is for historical.
Mary, I prefer having an entire series before I start reading, too. I'm going to have a lot of George R. R. Martin to read one day.
