I'm not a huge opera fan or even a minor opera fan (too uninformed, I suppose), but like so many people, I like the best parts of opera, the big, emotional pieces that everyone recognizes. This movie has lots of those. And while it's not a great, "I'll remember this forever" kind of movie, it is a sweet, feel-good movie (how could it not be?) and is quietly entertaining.
Yahoo is apparently allowing people to watch it online from September 24th-October 9th, so if you're interested, here's your chance. Here's the trailer:

The movie stars James Corden who is new to me, but probably not to those of you in the U.K., and will be in the upcoming movie, Into the Woods, as well as taking over from Craig Ferguson on The Late Late Show.
It also has small but fun roles by Julie Walters (Mrs. Weasley in the Harry Potter movies), the always wonderful Colm Meaney, Mackenzie Crook (also new to me, but really fun in this movie), Trystan Gravelle (Victor in Mr. Selfridge) and Jemima Rooper (the lead in one of my favorites, Lost in Austen).
In addition, here's a cute video with the leads and Taylor Swift who apparently wrote a song for the movie.
Lastly, here's the original audition on Britain's Got Talent (reproduced in the movie with Simon Cowell and cast).

I just watched the clip of Paul Potts. I have seen it before, but it is so incredibly beautiful. I was moved to tears again.
Mary, I was too. I can't watch this or the Susan Boyle audition without tearing up (even though I tell myself that I won't each time). Such beautiful voices. It's fantastic that the world finally got a chance to hear them.
