Years ago, we did a remodel of our family room. The original had a long closet with lots of space, but it took up a lot of room and we wanted more living space. So, in addition to some other changes, we chose to go with a smaller closet. We added inexpensive shelving on two sides and we use the room as a catch all (extra blankets, light bulbs, a folding table and chairs, the leaves for our dining room table, a vacuum cleaner and broom, tennis gear, and some other items we seldom use but need to keep). The problem has always been that the shelves don't hold enough, but we don't want to add more because the folding table and other large items take up the wall space below the shelves (the wall with no shelves is where the table leaves reside). There's also some necessary duct work taking up space. As a consequence, we've always ended up with things falling onto the floor, a big problem when I'm trying to get the vacuum cleaner out (or any of the other larger items).
So, after having guests over for Mother's Day and having to empty the closet to get to the things we needed, we finally decided to stop messing around and settled on a ridiculously simple solution to keep the floor free of unnecessary objects: two screw hooks screwed into one of the bottom particleboard shelves and two large laminated bags from a local fabric/craft shop. The total cost was about five dollars, and it took a matter of minutes to finish.
Ta daa! Extra storage space that doesn't interfere with the folding table below. Not the most artistic solution, but it works for the lighter-weight items such as spare blankets.

Wonderful solution, Myrna! I love it when you can solve one problem by doing something that doesn't involve a huge outlay of cash.
Today I was shocked that when we went to fix something, we could actually fix it with some screws and a bracket already on hand, instead of heading to the store once again to buy the parts. We have fixed up tons of things around this house before my daughter's wedding this Saturday, so this was a treat!
