Desk Love

So...I posted about this on Facebook the other day, but I know that not everyone sees those posts, and besides, I'm still trying to convince myself that while I want one of these, I don't necessarily need one (and yes, we don't always get to have something just because we want it).

At any rate, I was at Ikea looking at office desk chairs (not for me) and came across their Sit/Stand desks. I've been reading about those online for a long time, but I didn't know that Ikea had them. They are so awesome, and the new ones are electric and very quiet!

Here's one version (you can buy the bases with various table tops separately if you like in order to customize things a bit, but this complete desk comes in about 8 different color combinations, and there's also one with a more irregularly shaped top:

There are various varieties at IKEA (note: this post is from 2015, but now in 2024, there are a few more choices as noted in the link). Unless something has changed over the years, the controls on the electric ones can be placed on whichever side is most convenient:

Here's one of their sales pitch videos that demonstrates the different heights. There's also a hand crank model that is less money, but I couldn't find a video and didn't see it in action, so I can't speak to that one. This one, however, has me wishing I could justify the price of a new desk (and getting rid of my old one). I'll have to think about that. I'm not sure I can bring myself to do it no matter how much I love this desk. I may just be too frugal.

I hope all is well with all of you and that you're enjoying whatever season you happen to be in (depending on where you live. We're moving into late summer here, and it's hot, but I can already tell that autumn is on the way. The days are getting shorter, and my tomatoes, dealing with less light, are taking longer to ripen than they were a few weeks ago).

Have a great day!

Much as I know I SHOULD stand up because of all the typing I do every day, I simply love, yes love, my current desk. It was given to me over 30 years ago by my best customer at the time (and took four strong men to carry it down to the basement for me because it's extremely heavy when empty). It's an executive desk with three drawers on the left and two on the right, but the best part is that it has a huge top! On my right are two printers (colour and laser); in front of me are the tower (with a filing tray on top, amongst other things), monitor, speakers, router/modem, keyboard, and three transcription machines; to the right of me are my fax machine, electric pencil sharpener, and call display; and at the front I have room for 6-8 piles of paper, if necessary.
When my husband and I were fixing up the house in April/May, we replaced the carpeting in my office (so painted while we were at it). Rather than getting friends to help move my desk, my husband got out a jack and lifted my desk up a few inches instead. While the desk was lifted, I placed all the carpet tiles underneath. It took a bit of maneuvering, but just the fact that I didn't have to unplug all my computer wires made it worthwhile! ANYWAY, that made me think that if I were really serious about this "high desk idea", I could just have my husband LIFT my desk up, LOL! Okay, okay. It would be precarious at best, but it gave me a smile thinking about it! If I placed strong items underneath, it IS doable, I guess, but there would be times I'd want it back down where it belongs, and such a system wouldn't be adjustable. Darn! (But you made me think, LOL!)

Elaine, I hear you on having a big desk. Mine isn't anything special to look at, but it has room for a printer, monitor, keyboard, filing baskets and plenty of extra space for writing space and whatever research materials I need to have open. The drawers aren't the best but they're serviceable. But oh, you are brave moving such a large, heavy piece of furniture! It's the very reason I haven't changed my carpeting even though it is in sad shape.

MY carpeting was in sad shape for decades. It was only because our daughter was getting married (and we finally had a few extra dollars) that my husband agreed to replace the rec room indoor/outdoor 55-year-old carpeting with holes in it. When we found the carpet tiles, we had to buy enough to cover the rec room and laundry room (they meet each other at the bottom of the steps) - and we had to buy such a quantity that there were extras in order to do my small office (just off the rec room) too. I just love it in here. By doing the floor, it forced us to empty my office into the rec room (while the rec room was emptied into the crawl space), so we went ahead and painted the walls and ceiling too (first time also since house was built in 1960). I took down all my badminton plaques/trophies/medals accumulated during the last three decades, and suddenly there was "white space" on the wall my desk faces. I turned a large "wardrobe" that houses all my scrapbooking papers so that it was against that same wall, and that allowed for yet more "white space" near the window to my left. I also chopped the window curtain in half and hemmed it, as it got in my way scrapbooking, so that too created more "white space". It's amazing how much larger and cleaner my office looks now that all those things have been done. Wish we could have done it decades ago, but other priorities kept popping up.

Elaine, you win! I thought my carpeting was old at 24, but 55 beats that. I'm so glad that the changes ended up giving you the room you wanted!
