The Ultimate in Recycling: Shipping Container Homes

Last year I watched a television home program where they built a house out of shipping containers. It's not a new idea, but it was the first time I'd really seen how this was accomplished from the ground up. I have to say that I really like the idea. It reuses a large product that would otherwise have to be destroyed and disposed of, and it provides affordable housing for people who might not be able to buy or build one. And, as you can see in what follows below, some of them are quite stylish.

Wow. They really thought outside AND inside the box on that one! I love it when something is used for a different purpose.
My girlfriend recently gave me three stackable cooling racks, I'm sure intending for me to use them with all my baking. Well, I found they collapsed easily when you "knocked" the stacking part with a hot tray and much preferred my existing ones that don't stack. Then I realized I could use them stacked up as filing trays in my office. Paper won't knock over the "legs"! I just love it, as I've placed the three of them stacked on top of my printer. Paper still comes out below the bottom rack, and I have storage space within arm's reach. Perfect!

I've seen these before too. It's ingenious. I saw a large complex structure online somewhere that was made from several shipping containers. It was incredible. I'd live in it.

Laney4, I think you could write a book on repurposing. You always have such ingenious ideas!

Mary, I agree that I would live in one of these. People have done such amazing things with them. To me, it feels a bit like building with LEGOs and then personalizing the interior.
